In 2021, SCHS was named a California Distinguished School, and in US News was recognized as #587 in US public high schools, #76 in public California high schools, and #5 in San Diego County public high schools for its exceptional faculty, academic and extracurricular programs for students.
The Curriculum
Within our trimester system, students can take a maximum of 5 courses per trimester. Students earn 5 credits per trimester course, up to 75 credits per year; thus, students typically earn additional credits beyond the diploma requirement of 230 credits. Each trimester course is equivalent to five semester credits per seat time guidelines. As a school with STEM foci, we offer interested students, rigorous Project Lead the Way (PLTW) four-course sequences in Biomedical Sciences and Engineering.
Graduation course requirements are comparable to the University of California and California State Universities’ admission requirements, A-G eligibility, and additionally include Physical Education. Beyond the course requirements for graduation, students must complete 20 hours of community service, have a cumulative GPA of 1.50 for all coursework, and earn a minimum of 230 credits. Additionally, all Seniors will prepare a Genius Project (capstone, passion project) of their interest and choosing.
